There are four different types of gold on the market: Gold Plated, Gold Vermeil, Gold Filled, and Solid Gold. But what are the differences? Read on to find out.
Gold Plating is when a very thin layer of solid gold is applied onto another metal (normally copper or silver). It will wear off over time depending on how well it is looked after. It is usually a very low cost but will tarnish eventually and may irritate the skin. For a piece to be labelled 'gold plated' the layer of gold must be equal to or greater than 0.5 micron.
Gold Vermeil is usually made using solid 14 karat gold. The surface of this type of jewellery is then coated on to real pure silver which gives an expensive look without the price tag. In this case, the gold layer must be above 2.5 microns. Although this gold will not tarnish -the coating will wear off in time but can be reapplied by your jeweller.
Gold Filling is where a solid layer of gold has been bonded onto another metal (normally copper). It will last a very long time and is stronger than Gold Plating. This option is better quality than the previous two, is good for wearing every day, and good for most skin types.
Solid Gold is the best quality gold jewellery. Pieces such as this are normally handcrafted and can be quite expensive. Solid gold is great for everyday use and is hypoallergenic so will not react with the skin. This gold also holds the most value.
How Do I Know Which Type I Own?
If you want to find out if your gold has been put through any of these processes, simply take it to your local jewellers who should be able to tell you what kind of gold it is and how good its quality is.
Once you realise the four types of gold, you will be able to make a better decision when shopping for jewellery. Remember your budget and what pieces you want to buy before going into the store so that you do not waste time or money.
